Review: Good-Time Girl

“It’s frustrating and merciful that we don’t know how we appear to others.”

Leah Mason

The first thing that urged me to pick up this 250-page novel was the book cover. Just look at it, it’s bright and funky and in some ways does say a lot about the content of the book. Leah Mason, a 48-year old art director and our protagonist, is a quirky, fun and maybe a little annoying character who would NOT date a man older than her. She looks good for her age and it isn’t a surprise when she finds herself attracted to a 22-year old, Flynn. She hates G-strings, which she sees as something degrading to womanhood and is evident through her statement-

My gender wouldn’t be conned into wearing G-strings as underwear.

I loved the feminist attitude of her, and especially through this statement which has become my favourite-

However, he has doubts about their attorney and calls him “a pussy” – the classic symbol of weakness, female genitals, because, of course, childbirth is so easy.

The craziness doesn’t stop there as she buys herself a pink gun and names it Lucille. The gun brings out a whole lot of crazy side to her, even something like committing a terrorist act in a lingerie store. Really… A lingerie store! Also, the talk about ‘emotional immaturity’ comes to play a lot while describing her.

The book was an easy read. It flowed well, and at first while you might feel she is too immature for her age, but as the book goes on, you get to understand why. Her relationship with her work, her life and her young boyfriend were written in a sort of unattached harmony. She had a very damn care attitude before things spiral out of control and she gets to understand herself, and her actions.

The novel had a rocky start, and was right in the middle of the action. It also has a very chilled narration, which continued throughout the novel. Leah appeared to be a very real character. Her insecurities about her age, looks, and body appeared to be very real. She had a hint of feminism, although she might have been slightly homophobic, which is visible through a few of her dialogues like-

WTF?? Women’s magazines are gay to me. I don’t like to see chicks kissing nor have I ever wanted to kiss one. Lesbians, I don’t mean you; munch all the carpet you want. Hollywood babes doing it for the camera- ask your director if he’d French a guy.

The setting of the novel was really good and I enjoyed the plot. It had the complications and the resolutions needed. The character development was slight but it was acceptable. What I noticed while reading the ‘About the Author’ section was that it appears as if the author wrote about her own life. There were so many details coinciding with the life of the character that I wouldn’t be surprised if this is kind of biographic.

Towards the end, things appeared more real than ever, and I could feel myself tearing up. Overall, I honestly, loved the book. Leslie M. Rollins is indeed an amazing author, and I adore her writing style. I would love to read more of her books. I definitely recommend you to try it out as well. If you enjoy a fine-tuned, laid back read, you would definitely enjoy this.

  1. Thank you for your lovely review. I am honored—and so glad you enjoyed the book. I have another one out, very different, also on NG, “The Man Dance,” that I hope you read as well.
For the record: I borrowed from many aspects of my life in “Good-Time Girl.” However, Leah popped into my head as a fully-formed character who took off and did her own thing. I would never have done half the things she did, and sometimes thought while writing, “Oh, Leah, nooo!”

    1. I’m so glad you read my review. I’ll surely check out the other book.
I did feel the similarity between you and the character, but I think every author have a bit of them in their characters. And, I can imagine you going after your character in that tone😅
